PFAS-Learn About "Forever Chemicals"
May 4 · 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM · Cheboygan Area Public Library
PFAS are called “forever chemicals” because they do not break down easily in the environment or human body. They have been linked to many health issues, including cancer, liver damage, and immune system problems. Learn about PFAS on Monday, May 4, 6:00pm at the Cheboygan Area Public Library. PFAS Outreach Specialist Katie King, AgBio Research with Michigan State University, will explain what they are, what types of products PFAS are found in, and current state and federal regulations regarding them. She will describe how PFAS cycle through our environment and end up in our lakes, onto our farmland, and into our fish, plants, drinking water and other biota. King participated in research during grad school on PFAS, notably at Clark’s Marsh in Michigan, highly contaminated from an old air force base that used firefighting foam containing PFAS. Finally, King will discuss what people can do to reduce their own exposure to PFAS and give resources to learn more about these harmful chemicals. The PFAS program is an Earth Week Plus presentation. It is free and appropriate for all ages. See the complete Earth Week Plus schedule at earthweekplus.org Registration is not required.
